NJVRA Signed into Law

LWVNJ accepts ceremonial pen from Governor Mikie Sherrill

Ahead of the 250th anniversary of our nation's independence, New Jersey achieves a historic victory for voters.

Today, Governor Mikie Sherrill signed the John R. Lewis Voter Empowerment Act into law, making New Jersey the 10th state with a Voting Rights Act.

To everyone who organized, advocated, testified, called, emailed, and showed up: this victory is yours. Thank you for helping make New Jersey's democracy stronger.

LWVNJ would like to extend our thanks to prime sponsors and champions of this legislation: Assemblywoman Verlina Reynolds-Jackson, Senator Shirley K. Turner, Senator Joe Cryan, Senate President Nick Scutari, and Assembly Speaker Craig J. Coughlin. Thank you also to Lieutenant Governor Dr. Dale Caldwell for his leadership in the process, and to Governor Mikie Sherrill for taking quick action to sign this act into law.
